The course is aimed at mastering basic principles of mathematical and scientific exposition, understanding the role of Mathematical Rigor, Notation and Style both in popular and specialized texts such as mathematical papers, overviews, lecture notes, and dissertation theses. We do not produce templates of well-written mathematical texts. Instead, we focus on developing analytical skills by analyzing examples of different actual scientific texts of various stylistic and methodological quality. We seek ways to improve the texts based on few guiding principles and on the understanding of the objectives, subject matter and the circle of potential readers. The second part of the course will familiarize the students with the less known aspects of mathematical typesetting in AMS-LaTeX, managing relatively big texts such as book manuscripts and theses, using BibTeX for bibliographies, and pgf/TiKZ for line art.
