Abstract

The COVID-19 crisis and rapidly emerging ‘new-normality' has brought the importance of interdisciplinary scholarship to the forefront. For example, understanding the financial market implications of the pandemic requires an understanding of the human resource implications associated with the present and future of relevant work processes and dynamics of working away from traditional work set-up and the role of human resource management (HRM). The aim of the course is to become the doctoral students familiar with current research topics and practical focus, methodology and methods of data collection and analysis, specific to HRM research and relevant for managerial research in general. As a practical implication of the course, the students will be able to discuss current topics in people management; to identify the key theoretical and methodological approaches to study HRM phenomena, to develop theoretical models and to design empirical research. The course covers several topics: theoretical and methodological challenges in HRM research; strategic human resource management and organizational performance; talent management; employee engagement; HRM in a new reality: impact of HRM on organizational resilience, employee engagement and burnout during the COVID-19 pandemics. The research seminar will be conducted in an interactive format based on team work and individual assignments: discussions on recommended articles, intellectual ‘battles’ between the proponents of different methodological approaches to research in management, etc. The final assessment is a written work, the form of which is selected from 3 options: reflection paper, project proposal, conference paper. The learning outcomes of the course are as follows: the students will be able to discuss current topics in people management; to identify the key theoretical and methodological approaches to study HRM phenomena, to develop theoretical models and to design empirical research, focusing on new directions in HRM field.
