Contemporary Trends and Prospects in the Political Economy of Development

12th Annual ICSID Conference "Contemporary Trends and Prospects in the Political Economy of Development" will be organized in a hybrid format by the Higher School of Economics in Moscow on September 24-25, 2023. The event attracts a large number of young scholars and experts from the different universities presenting new research on a variety of topics (details of the last year's conference can be found here).

Contributions from the fields of political economy, economics and political science are invited. We welcome submissions that adopt theoretical as well as empirical, qualitative as well as quantitative research designs and that can offer useful perspectives on recent developments and new challenges in political economy.

Topics of interest for submission include, but are not limited to:

  • Role of institutions in economic development;

  • The role of technology in economic development;

  • Income inequality and wealth distribution;

  • Collective action and public goods;

  • Comparative studies of governance;

  • Social capital, trust, and cultural norms;

  • Human capital and economic development;

  • Political elites and economic performance;

  • History and persistence of economic growth.

The workshop "Contemporary Trends and Prospects in the Political Economy of Development" welcomes scholars from around the world and will operate in both English and Russian languages, with priority given to English. To ensure efficient communication and engagement, the workshop sessions will be categorized based on language preference - English and Russian. However, it is highly encouraged for participants to present in English, in order to accommodate a broader audience.

Adapting to current global circumstances, the workshop will adopt a hybrid format. It will consist of in-person sessions as the primary mode of interaction, but virtual participation will also be accommodated. Despite the allowance for online involvement, we place a higher emphasis on face-to-face communication, thereby encouraging as many participants as possible to engage physically.

To participate in the workshop, please submit a paper abstract of up to 250 words (or a draft), together with a max two-page CV, to ICSID manager Valeriya Kotelnikova (vkotelnikova@hse.ruby July 30th, 2023. Applicants will be informed about the selection before September 1st, and the authors of accepted proposals are expected to submit full papers / presentations by September 10th.

The International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development (ICSID) is one of the international laboratories created by the Higher School of Economics in 2011, and currently unites a team of researchers from Russia, USA and Europe.
