Entrance exams
Dear applicants,
Admission 2026:
Selection for places on a tuition fee basis is not implemented in the recruitment year 2026.
Applicants pass the following entrance tests:
- portfolio;
- scientific specialty;
- foreign language (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian).
Entrance tests are assessed according to a 50-point grading system. A score of up to 15 points for the entrance test for a portfolio, a scientific specialty and a foreign language is considered unsatisfactory.
The applicant has the right to provide individual achievements (submitted at the discretion of the applicant no later than the day of completion of applications and documents). See section 4.1. of the Admission Rules.
1. Foreign language
Entrance examinations in a foreign language are evaluated on 50-point evaluation system. The score from 1 to 15 points is considered unsatisfactory. Evaluation of 15-50 points is considered satisfactory.
If you submit an internationally recognized language certificate in English, the foreign language exam requirement is waived.
Applicants who have completed an English-taught Master's programme do not have to take an exam in Foreign language.
Native speakers of English do not have to take an exam.
2. Special discipline
Entrance examinations in the specialty are assessed on a 100-point assessment system.The score from 0 to 15 points for portfolio/special discipline is considered unsatisfactory. Minimum scores (unsatisfactory grades) for individual elements of the admission test in the specialty are contained in the entrance examination programs for the specialty for individual competitions.
Examination location: Moscow (for those applying to HSE in Nizhny Novgorod, examinations are held in Nizhny Novgorod; for those applying to HSE in St. Petersburg, examinations are held in St. Petersburg).
The exam may be taken via Internet call services Skype (or equivalent). Permission must be sought from the Doctoral school at an early stage.
