Ümit Nazmi Hazır told about "Patterns of Contemporary Anti-Westernism"
His presentation subject was ‘‘Patterns of Contemporary Anti-Westernism: Neo-Ottomanism and Neo-Eurasianism in Turkish and Russian Foreign Policies.’’ Some scholars and Ph.D. students at HSE also actively participated in the seminar with their comments and questions. Prof. Olga Malinova, head of the Doctoral School of Political Science, moderated the seminar. Prof. Malinova also delivered comments and asked a question regarding Weltanschauung concept. Prof. Mikhail Ilyin made a deep comment and asked some questions. Prof. Ilyin underlined the importance of ontological factors and holding a critical approach to discourse. He also talked on the phenomenon of westernization, modernity as well as the current of thoughts of Neo-Ottomanism and Neo-Eurasianism. Asst. Prof. Iain Ferguson also had very deep and valuable comments regarding the theoretical aspect of the thesis. He commented on worldview perspective in world politics. He also mentioned the role of agents and identity in terms of constructivism. Besides, he emphasized the statist and utopian characteristic of Neo-Ottomanism and Neo-Eurasianism. Assoc. Prof. Ekim Arbatlı, bearing a deep knowledge on Turkish politics, delivered comments on Turkish political elites and Neo-Ottomanism in the AKP’s foreign policy. She pointed to the shift in the AKP’s Turkish foreign policy from pro-Western to Anti-Western Neo-Ottomanism. Assoc. Prof. Sergey Akopov’s comments covered Russian politics and Neo-Eurasianism. He had recommendations about Neo-Eurasianist thinkers and literature. In the last part of the seminar, Hazır answered the questions regarding his presentation. The seminar ended with Prof. Malinova’s closing speech and thanking all participants.
