About HSE Doctoral Programmes

More than 1000 students are currently studying in doctoral programmes at HSE.

HSE doctoral programme is primarily a research degree, and students can study in 22 different doctoral schools.

Why HSE?

HSE is the leader in Russia in economics, management, social sciences, and computer science. Founded in 1992, the university is young, however, it is already a highly respected research centre. In 2009, the Russian Ministry of Education granted HSE “National Research University” status, a distinction conferred only to the country’s most prestigious higher education institutions.

HSE is an excellent place for young researchers and scholars. The university’s main campus is located in the centre of Moscow, and there are affiliate campuses in St. Petersburg, Perm, and Nizhny Novgorod. HSE plays an integral role not only in the vibrant urban centres that it is a part of, but also on the global stage, through its partnerships and agreements with more than 300 international universities and institutions. These connections both locally and internationally present a vast array of opportunities for students in doctoral programmes.

HSE sets itself apart in combining the best of Russian higher education traditions with widely recognized international teaching and research practices:

  • 60 research programmes in a wide range of academic fields
  • High standards of education and world-class research
  • Individually-driven curricula
  • Engagement with international faculty and research staff
  • Internships with international partner universities
  • Employment opportunities at HSE research laboratories
  • Modern infrastructure and electronic library resources
  • Scholarships available

Doctoral programmes at HSE meet international standards in providing specialized training and extensive research opportunities for degree candidates. Joint PhD and cotutelle programmes are available for outstanding students.
